Volunteering with OR in Education (ORiE): make a difference and celebrate an incredible year
As we dive into a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the incredible impact of our ORiE volunteers and inspire even more people to join us in making a difference. In 2024, our volunteers have made a lasting impact by sharing their knowledge of OR and inspiring students to explore the possibilities it offers. Here’s a closer look at what we’ve accomplished together this year and how you can get involved in 2025!
This past year, ORiE volunteers have been at the heart of many inspiring events, engaging with young minds and promoting the real-world relevance of OR. At the inaugural OR STEM Day, held at the National Memorial Arboretum, students explored how OR principles apply to real-world scenarios, such as linear programming and process improvement. The event’s success was undeniable, and we’re thrilled to announce its return in 2025! Our volunteers also played a key role supporting ORS staff at the Big Bang Fair and New Scientist Live, two of the UK’s largest STEM events. With interactive activities and firsthand accounts of their OR journeys, volunteers reached over 1000 attendees at each event, sparking curiosity and connecting them with pathways in OR careers. Beyond large-scale events, volunteers also brought OR to life in classrooms and careers fairs. From introducing OR to school students to guiding university students towards career possibilities, they demonstrated the field’s far-reaching relevance and potential.
