Call for Steering Group Committee Members

The OR Society is inviting applications from individuals interested in joining the OR Society’s Pro Bono OR Steering Group. There are currently up to 3 positions available. The Steering Group plays a vital role in supporting the delivery and future development of the OR Society’s Pro Bono OR programme, which aims to:

  • Help third sector organisations benefit from operational research
  • Raise awareness of operational research across wider audiences
  • Support the professional development of OR analysts through meaningful volunteering opportunities

The Steering Group provides strategic oversight, helps set annual goals, supports the work of the Pro Bono OR Manager, and ensures that the scheme is operating safely, effectively, and in line with its objectives. Members also contribute to reviewing and approving new charity projects, monitor risks and outcomes, and make recommendations to the Society’s Board regarding future direction. Members are also expected to play a role in succession planning and to contribute to the Pro Bono Manager’s annual report to the Board.

Membership of the Steering Group includes OR professionals with practical experience (ideally including the third sector), as well as representatives from the charity sector. With several members stepping down, we are now seeking new members with experience or interest in:

  • Using OR or analytical methods in the third sector or not-for-profit settings
  • Governance, programme oversight or charity strategy
  • Communications or volunteer engagement
  • Equity, diversity and inclusion in volunteer-led programmes

Appointment is initially for a three-year term, which may be renewed by agreement and members are expected to attend three meetings per year, alongside occasional contributions between meetings. Most members also form part of the project initiation panel for incoming requests from third sector organisations. Membership of the OR Society is a prerequisite to apply.

If you are interested in joining the OR Society’s Pro Bono OR Steering Group, please apply by 30 September 2025 by sending a CV and a short covering statement (no more than 500 words) outlining your reasons for applying and what you would contribute to the Steering Group.

New appointments will begin in November 2025.

Please send applications and queries to Isma Shafqat, Pro Bono OR Manager: [email protected]
