Black Researcher Consortium (BRC) Launched to Tackle Underrepresentation in UK Research

A major new initiative has been launched to address the persistent underrepresentation of Black researchers within the UK’s research landscape. The Black Researcher Consortium (BRC) is a strategic, community-driven effort, designed by Black researchers and Black-led organisations in collaboration with leading research institutions. Its mission is to create systemic change by improving the representation, progression, and retention of Black talent across academia, industry, government, and other research-intensive sectors.

Despite Black individuals comprising approximately 4% of the UK’s working-age population, they remain significantly underrepresented in research, particularly at senior levels—fewer than 1% of professors in the UK are Black. The BRC aims to close this gap through a multi-pronged approach that includes enhanced access to professional networks, tailored mentorship, training programmes, and career development opportunities. In parallel, the Consortium will offer expert guidance on inclusive research design and practices to ensure that equity is embedded at every level of the research process.

The BRC has been developed in partnership with eight major research institutions, including the UK’s four National Academies, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and the Wellcome Trust. Backed by initial funding from the Elsevier Foundation and Vitae, the Consortium is funded through to at least 2030, offering a stable platform to build long-term impact.

As it enters its foundational phase, the BRC’s board has announced an open recruitment process for the organisation’s first Director, who will lead its strategic development and implementation. Central to the Consortium’s approach is a commitment to centring the expertise and leadership of Black researchers and Black-led groups, recognising their critical role in shaping a more inclusive and equitable research ecosystem.

By working collaboratively and advocating for structural reform, the Black Researcher Consortium seeks not only to improve representation but also to transform the research environment into one where Black researchers can thrive and lead at every stage of their careers.
