Increasing successful recruitment of Black, Asian & Minoritised Ethnicity candidates

Project summary

To help the NSPCC understand why they are not recruiting sufficient B, A & ME candidates and what they could do differently to improve this. Help them to understand what they might do differently in order to improve the drop-off rate at the short-list and appointment stages.

How will this project benefit the organisation?

In order to focus on children, the NSPCC needs to reflect the needs of each child. A better reflection of the diversity of the children NSPCC deals with should be matched by the diversity of its staff.

Project description

Meet with Brett Terry and the ED&I team to ascertain what relevant information is available.  Analyse the evidence (data, recruitment materials, processes, etc.)

Help them:

understand whether this trend in respect of B,A&me candidates is unique to us, the sector or is a wider UK phenomenon

diagnose any real or potential barriers for applicants from this community resulting from our existing recruitment process; and suggest ways to mitigate or remove these.

identify new recruitment ideas and initiatives which might help prevent the ‘drop off’ of B,A&me applicants as they progress through the recruitment process

More strategically, help them consider:

whether, from our data, there could and should be an argument made to introduce positive action initiatives for this community.  And, if so, which ones

the impact, positive or otherwise, our anonymised shortlisting has in helping or hindering our efforts to convert a higher proportion of B,A&me applicants to new starters

whether we should set diversity targets and/or quotas, for the attraction and recruitment of applicants from this community.

To produce an interim presentation and discussion on what could be done differently before submitting a written report. It may also be worth looking at data on recruitment of people with disabilities as this appears to be working well.
