Develop an Impact Measurement Approach

Project summary

Design an approach for measuring the impact of risk reduction interventions in maternity and neonatal services to support fundraising.

How will this project benefit the organisation?

Baby Lifeline’s work supports frontline NHS staff to prevent injuries and deaths in and around childbirth. It does this through 3 means: providing equipment, delivering training and by conducting research. The impact of their interventions is the reduction of risk of preventable deaths and harm. In order to support bids for future funding to continue and expand its services, the charity needs to be able to be able to quantify its impacts.

Baby Lifeline has raised millions of pounds to purchase much-needed equipment for maternity and special care baby units. Through their expert-led training, tens of thousands of NHS health professionals have improved their knowledge and confidence in areas shown to be linked to avoidable harm and death. The charity’s national research has also informed parliament and impacted care across the UK.

Project description

Baby Lifeline currently has some case study examples of the impact of its interventions as well as a considerable amount of training evaluation data from course participants. However, it has no way of quantifying the impact of reduced risks of death or harm. The main purpose of this project is to address that gap.

The project is likely to require the following activities:

  • Agree objectives and scope with Baby Lifeline
  • Review existing impact data (quant & qual)
  • Identify data gaps
  • Propose approach and processes to address the gaps
  • Create/recommend tool (or prototype) and/or process
  • Handover to charity
